Do you know what’s covered by your car insurance policy? Research by one provider suggests many of us are relying on urban myths and making assumptions about what is and what isn’t covered without checking the small print.
This can be a costly mistake - anything that is deemed negligence on our behalf may result in a vastly reduced payout from the car insurance provider, if a payout is forthcoming at all.
For example, 65 per cent of drivers eat while driving, while 36 per cent smoke. Neither is illegal, but both have been listed as dangerous activities according to the Highway Code. If you’re involved in an accident while eating or smoking you could be accused of negligence - even if the accident wasn’t your fault.
Another common misconception is that it’s ‘OK’ to drive other people’s cars as long as you have your own car insurance. In fact, not all policies cover other vehicles - and even if they do it is usually only third party cover - so check your insurance policy if you need to drive someone else’s car.
It may seem like a simple error to put the wrong fuel into your car at the pump but it can cost thousands of pounds if your engine needs to be stripped down. Unfortunately, most car insurance companies do not cover this act of negligence.
The good news of course is that all of these errors can be avoided with some simple checks. Label your fuel cap to give you a last-minute reminder at the pump, check the small print of your policy before driving another car and avoid any distractions behind the wheel.
