According to a leading insurance company, many people are running the risk of invalidating their car insurance policy due to them believing the myths rather then reading the small print.
The research found that Brits are failing to check what they are covered for under their policy. One of the most common reasons for making your car insurance invalid was eating and drinking whilst driving. Many insurance companies would refuse to pay out in the event of an accident as they would consider you to be negligent if you had been eating or smoking.
Regardless of this information, a study has shown that 65 per cent of people still eat whilst they are driving and a further 36 per cent of people smoke when they are driving but do not know that this will void their policy. According to the insurance company who conducted the study, the reason people don’t know this is because it’s not against the law and therefore people presume that they are not affecting their cover.
Another thing that drivers do without realising they may lose their motor insurance cover is drive a friend’s car. There were 29 per cent of people who had driven a friend’s car and presumed that they would be covered under their own insurance. The problem with this is that it is rarely the case and if you are covered to drive other’s cars then this rarely stretches beyond third party cover.
A further misconception people made was to believe that miscalculating their mileage wouldn’t affect their policy, however; this is not the case and by failing to inform your insurance company of any changes to your annual mileage means that your policy will become invalid.
Another myth that people believe is that your policy will cover you if you put the wrong type of fuel in the tank. However, according to the company who carried out the study, this is not the case and out of the many drivers that make this mistake every year, 10 per cent don’t realise that they won’t be covered for it.
Whilst finding a cheap car insurance quote is important, it is always worth remembering that it is important to check the small print on your policy to see what you are and are not covered for. Review your terms and conditions carefully and regularly in order to make sure that you are not doing anything that may invalidate your policy.
According to the insurance company who conducted the study, people don’t think that eating or smoking whilst they drive will affect their policy as it is not against the law, however; this is not the case and your policy will be invalidated.
Driving your friend’s car could also invalidate your motor insurance cover.
